Days of the week facts

Happy Monday!!

May your day be marvelous!!

Joey wants to know if you know where the seven (7) days of the week came from? Sometime around the 6th century B.C. the seven days of the week came from the ancient Babylonians. The ancient Babylonians divided their year into weeks. The ancient Babylonians named the days of the week after the sun, moon, and planets. The days of the week names have been changed many times over the years by many different cultures leading up to our Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday week names.

What is your favorite day of the week?

Facts about the seven (7) days of the week:

1. The days of the week from the bible times were: day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4, day 5, day 6, and day 7. The 7th day is the sabbath; a day of rest!

2. The Roman’s associated the days of the week with the moon, sun, and planets:

First day of the week. Day one (1) Moon (Monday)

Second day of the week. Day two (2) Mars (Tuesday)

Third day of the week. Day three (3) Mercury (Wednesday)

Fourth day of the week. Day four (4) Jupiter (Thursday)

Fifth day of the week. Day five (5) Venus (Friday)

Sixth day of the week. Day six (6) Saturn (Saturday)

Seventh day of the week. Day seven (7) Sun (Sunday)

3. There are seven (7) days in a week. There are fifty-two (52) weeks in a year. Twenty-four (24) hours in a day. There is one-hundred and sixty-eight (168) hours in a week. How many minutes is there in a week?

4. Every year has fifty-two (52) Mondays unless the year starts on a Monday then it will have fifty-three (53) Mondays in the year. If a leap year starts on a Sunday or Monday there will be fifty-three (53) Mondays in that year. Some Months have four (4) Mondays in it and other months have five (5) Mondays in it depending on which day the month starts on.

5. Here are the abbreviations for the days of the week:

Sunday – Sun.

Monday – Mon.

Tuesday – Tue., or Tues.

Wednesday – Wed.

Thursday – Thu., Thur., or Thurs.

Friday – Fri.

Saturday – Sat.

6. The year 2022 will start on a Saturday and end on a Saturday! Christmas Eve will be on a Saturday in 2022. Saturday is a good day it is part of the weekend. Did you know that weekend stands for the end of the week? The end of the week is Saturday and Sunday.

Quarters and Gratitude

Happy Thankful Thursday!!

Today is a great day to be thankful and count all your blessings!! We have so much to be thankful for in this life and sometimes we overlook all the blessings that surround us. So, take a moment and just look around and see how much you have to be thankful for.

We are on letter Qq of the gratitude alphabet. Q is for quarter! What are you thankful for that begins with the letter Q?

Joey is thankful for quarters! Joey loves to save quarters so he can buy a bag of M&M’s. Once he saves enough quarters up, he gets to get himself a bag of M&M’s. Joey wants to tell you about quarters. Did you know the first quarter that was made by the U.S mint was made in 1796? Yep, that was a very long time ago! They were made of silver. From the years of 1796 to 1930 the front (obverse) of the quarter had the Goddess of Liberty on it and the back (reverse) had an eagle in flight on it.

Do you know how many quarters you have to have to make $10.00?

Facts about quarters:

1. One quarters is twenty-five (25) cents. It takes 4 quarters to make $1.00.

2. In 1932 the U.S Mint replaced the Goddess of Liberty with George Washington’s bust on the quarter. On the back there is an eagle. George Washington has appeared on all quarters from 1932 to the present year 2021. The back side of the quarter has changed over the years.

3. In 1965 the U.S. mint stopped making quarters with silver. Quarters after 1965 are made from nickel and copper.

4. From 1999 to 2008 the U.S. mint honored each of the fifty states with a quarter designed for each state.

5. In 2009 the U.S mint made 6 more quarters to honor each of the following U.S territories: Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands.

6. The United States Mint made about 758,000,000 quarters from January to April of 2021. That is a lot of quarters!!

Pencil Facts

Happy Thankful Thursday!!

May your day be filled with lots of opportunities to be thankful!

We are on letter Pp of the gratitude alphabet. P is for pencil.

What are you thankful for that begins with the letter P?

Joey is thankful for pencils. He loves to draw and write with pencils! He can draw and color a cute little dinosaur with his colored pencils. Joey wants to tell you about the modern pencil lead. Did you know that the modern pencil lead was invented by a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte. He was a scientist and a French painter who invented the modern pencil lead in 1795.

Facts about pencils:

1. Sometime in 1564 graphite became very popular.

2. Conrad Gessner made the first depiction of a wood pencil in 1565. He had a drawing published that depicted a long thin piece of graphite inside a tube of wood.

3. In 1662 Nuremberg Germany created the first mass produced pencils.

4. In 1812 William Munroe made the first American wood pencils.

5. Sometime In 1858 Hymen Lipman made the first pencil with an eraser attached to it.

6. An average sized tree when cut can make about 170,000 or more pencils. That is a lot of pencils.

7. One pencil can write on average around 45,000 words. That is enough words to write a short story!

8. A pencil can write in space because it doesn’t depend on gravity.

9. Ernest Hemingway said, “If you write with a pencil, you get three different sights at it to see if the reader is getting what you want him to. First when you read it over and then when it is typed you get another chance to improve it, and again in the proof. Writing it first in pencil gives you one-third more chance to improve it.

Pencils are amazing! You can write a novel or you can draw a masterpiece with pencils. So, get out those pencils and start writing or drawing!!
