Facts about Georgia

Good day to you!! 

Are you ready to learn some fun facts about Georgia?

Joey loves learning facts about the different states. He would like to share some of those cool facts with you! I will be posting facts about each of the fifty states in the United States. The states will be done in alphabetical order! Last week we posted facts about Florida. This week we are posting cool facts about Georgia.

Did you know that Georgia was the 4th state to join the union? Yes, that is correct. Georgia officially joined the union on January 2, 1788! Georgia is located on the Southeastern part of the United States. The Atlantic Ocean borders Georgia on the east. Georgia is bordered by five (5) states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Alabama. Georgia is the twenty-second (22nd) largest state in the United States. Georgia is a big state. There are about 10,711,000 people living in Georgia.

Facts about Georgia:

1. A few things Georgia is known for are the array of different climates, beaches, and peaches. The nicknames for the state of Georgia are: The Peach State, The Goober State, and The Empire State. The Peach State is Georgia’s official nickname. The Georgia state motto is Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation. The abbreviation for Georgia is GA.

2. The capital of Georgia is Atlanta. Atlanta officially became the capital of Georgia in 1868. Atlanta has a population of around 498,700 people.

3. The Georgia state bird is the Brown Thrasher. The Brown Thrasher was chosen as the state bird on April 6, 1935. The Georgia Brown Thrasher has brownish colored feathers. The Georgia Brown Thrasher has an off-white creamy color on its chest and underneath area with streaks of dark brown.

4. The Georgia official state flower is the Rosa laevigata also known as the Cherokee rose. The Georgia Rosa laevigata is a type of climbing rose shrub. The flower which is white grows on vines and the vines can climb very high unless it is kept trimmed. The Rasa laevigata starts blooming in spring/summer. They are very beautiful flowers/roses!! The Georgia Rosa laevigata became Georgia ’s official state flower on August 18, 1916.

5. The first flag Georgia used was on October 17, 1879. There may have been one before 1879. The Georgia state flag that is used today became the official flag on May 8, 2003. The flag has changed many times over the years.

6. Some crops that are grown in Georgia are: blueberries, corn, cotton, hay, peaches, peanuts, pecans, and wheat.

7. A few places to visit in Georgia are: the Chattahoochee National Forest, Dinotorium located in Stone Mountain Park, and the Arabia Mountain. If you love beaches Georgia has many of them! Here is a list of some of them:

Jekyll Island beach

Tybee Island beach

Sea Island beach

North beach

Cumberland National Seashore

Simons Island

St. Andrew beach

8. Some of the animals that live in Georgia are alligators, armadillos, bears, chipmunks, foxes, white tailed deer, and wild boar.

9. Georgia can get very hot and very cold depending on the time of year. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Georgia was 112 degrees Fahrenheit in Louisville, Georgia on July 24, 1952. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Georgia was -17 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees below zero) in Georgia was on January 27, 1940.

Facts about Bumblebee Bats

Good day to you! 

May your day be rainbowtastic!!

Joey wants to know if you have ever heard about the Bumblebee bat also known as the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat? They are very tiny bats. They are cute, but do not ever approach one. The Bumblebee bat can grow to about 1.3 inches long. The Bumblebee bat can weigh up to about 2 grams. The Bumblebee bat is the smallest of the bat species. It is about the size of a large bumblebee. The bumblebee bat is also one of the world’s smallest mammals.


Do you have bats in the state you reside in?

 

Facts about Bumblebee bats:

1. Bumblebee bats are on the endangered species list. There is about 2000 or less of the Bumblebee bats left in the world. That number does not include the Myanmar or the Thailand population of the Bumblebee bats. The Myanmar and Thailand Bumblebee bats are legally protected.

2. The Bumblebee bat can live up to about 10 years or less.

3. The Bumblebee bats are omnivores. They eat mostly insects and spiders. They catch their food by using echolocation. Echolocation is being able to locate insects/objects by using soundwaves that send back echoes that let them know where the insects/objects are.

4. Bumblebee bats are nocturnal. They do most of their insects hunting during the night/dusk hours. They like to fly around the tops of bamboo to catch their insects/food to eat.

5. Bumblebee bats live in groups inside of limestone caves that are near water. A group of Bumblebee bats are called a colony. A baby Bumblebee bat is called a pup.

Facts about Florida

Hello to YOU!! 

Who is ready to learn some cool facts about Florida?

Joey and Jinger love learning facts about the different states. Do you? They would like to share some of those cool facts with you! I will be posting facts about each of the fifty states in the United States. The states will be done in alphabetical order! Last week we posted facts about Delaware. This week we are posting facts about Florida.

Did you know that Florida was the 27th state to join the union? Yep, that is right. Florida officially joined the union on March 3, 1845! Florida is located on the Southeastern Coast of the United States. The Gulf of Mexico is on one side of Florida and the Atlantic Ocean is on the other side. Florida is bordered by two(2)states: Alabama and Georgia. Florida is the twenty-second (22nd) largest state in the United States. Florida is a big state. There are about 21,780,000 people living in Florida.

Facts about Florida:

1. A few things Florida is known for are alligators, beaches, and oranges. The nicknames for the state of Florida are: The Sunshine State and The Alligator State. The Sunshine State is Florida’s official nickname. The Florida state motto is In God We Trust. The abbreviation for Florida is FL.

2. The capital of Florida is Tallahassee. Tallahassee officially became the capital of Florida in 1824. Tallahassee has a population of around 197,787 people.

3. The Florida state bird is the Northern mockingbird. The Northern mockingbird was chosen as the state bird in 1927. The Florida Northern mockingbird has grayish-brown to dark brown feathers with some white. The Florida Northern mockingbird has an off-white color on its chest and underneath area.

4. The Florida official state flower is the Orange Blossom. The Florida Orange Blossom grows on orange trees. They start blooming as early as February; sometimes earlier. The Florida Orange Blossoms are white in color. The Florida Orange Blossoms are star-shaped. They are very beautiful flowers!! The Florida Orange Blossom became Florida’s official state flower in 1909.

5. The first flag Florida used was on June 25, 1845. The Florida state flag that is used today became the official flag on November 6, 1900. The flag has changed a few times over the years.

6. Some crops that are grown in Florida are: oranges, blueberries, tangerines, tomatoes, watermelons, and corn.

7. A few places to visit in Florida are: Walt Disney World, The EPCOT, and the Universal Orlando Resort. If you love beaches Florida has many of them! Here is a list of some of them:

Clearwater beach

Daytona beach

Fort Lauderdale beach

Miami beach

Naples beach

Panama City beach

Pensacola beach

8. Some of the animals that live in Florida are alligators, bears, dolphins, flamingos, panthers, pelicans, otters, and some crocodiles.

9. Florida can get very hot and very cold depending on the time of year. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Florida was 109 degrees Fahrenheit in Monticello, Florida on June 29, 1931. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Florida was -2 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees below zero) in Tallahassee, Florida on February 13, 1899.

Facts about llamas

Howdy to you! 

May you have a fun filled day of learning!

Joey and Jinger love llamas! Are you ready to learn some cool fun facts about llamas? Llamas are cute large furry mammals with long necks and legs. Did you know that adult Llamas can weigh between 260 pounds to 430 pounds, a little more or less depending on the type of llama? An adult llama can get pretty tall depending on the type of llama they can get up to 5.9 feet in height.

 

What is your favorite type of mammal?

 

Facts about llamas:

1. Did you know that llamas and alpacas are in the camel family? There are 6 different types of llamas. Here is a list of the six types of llamas in alphabetical order:

      Alpacas  

      Classic llama (lama glama)

      Medium llama

      Suri llama

      Vicuna llama

      Wooly llama

2. Llama’s fur/hair/wool can be solid or spotted and come in a variety of colors including black, white, brown, gray, tan, reddish brown, or beige.

3. Llamas are social animals and they live in groups of llamas. A group of llamas is called a herd of llamas. Female llamas are referred to as dams or just female. Male llamas are referred to as studs or geldings. A baby llama is called a cria. A juvenile llama is called a tuis.

4. Llamas in captivity can live up to 26 years or more. Llamas in the wild can live anywhere from 15 to 25 years; sometimes more or sometimes less.

5. Llamas are herbivores. Herbivore means they do not eat meat. Llamas eat grasses, hay, flowers, fruits, plants, shrubs, small trees, and other vegetation. They drink water.

6. Did you know that llama’s poop doesn’t smell bad? Yep, that is right! It does not smell bad so it would make the perfect fertilizer because it is nearly odorless. Some people refer to llama’s poop as llama beans, because their droppings/poop is similar to beans.

7. Vicuna is one of the smallest types of llamas. The Vicuna can weigh up to about 140 pounds.

8. A llama can spit up to 10 feet or more away. So, if you ever visit one at the zoo be careful.

The states will be done in alphabetical order! Last week we posted facts about Connecticut. This week we are posting facts about Delaware.

Did you know that Delaware was the 1st state to join the union? Yes, that is right Delaware started what we now know as the United States of America. Delaware officially joined the union on December 7, 1787! Delaware is located on the East Coast of the United States. It is a Mid-Atlantic state. Delaware is bordered by three (3) other states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Delaware is the forty-ninth (49th) largest state in the United States. Delaware is one of the smallest states. There are about 989,948 people living in Delaware.

Facts about Delaware:

1. A few things Delaware is known for is being a tax-free state, beaches, and the first state to join the union. The nicknames for the state of Delaware are: The First State, the Blue Hen State, the Diamond State, and the Small Wonder. The First State is Delaware’s official nickname. The Delaware state motto is Liberty and independence. The abbreviation for Delaware is DE.

2. The capital of Delaware is Dover. Dover officially became the capital of Delaware in 1777. Dover has a population of around 39,403 people.

3. The Delaware state bird is the Delaware Blue Hen. The Delaware Blue Hen was chosen as the state bird on April 14, 1939. The Delaware Blue Hen has grayish brown feathers with a hint of blue.

4. The Delaware official state flower is the Peach Blossom. The Delaware Peach Blossom grows on peach trees. They bloom in the early spring. The Delaware Peach Blossoms range in color from a very light pink to an almost purple color. The Peach Blossoms have tear shaped petals. They are very beautiful flowers!! The Delaware Peach Blossom became Delaware ’s official state flower on May 9, 1895.

5. The Delaware state flag became the official flag on July 24, 1913.

6. Some crops that are grown in Delaware are: barley, soy beans, wheat, and corn.

7. A few places to visit in Delaware are: Rehoboth beach, Bethany beach, and the Delaware Children's Museum in Wilmington Delaware.

8. Some of the animals that live in Delaware are beavers, chipmunks, coyotes, moles, river otter, skunks, white tailed deer, and wolves.

9. Delaware can get very hot and very cold depending on the time of year. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Delaware was 110 degrees Fahrenheit in Millsboro, Delaware on July 21, 1930. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Delaware was -17 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees below zero) in Millsboro, Delaware on January 17, 1893.

10. Delaware has a lot of shoreline and beaches. It would make a great place to visit if you like beaches!!
