Edgar Allen Poe, a renowned poet, began his poetic journey at a tender age, possibly before he turned thirteen. With a repertoire of over 50 poems, he was born in the vibrant city of Boston, Massachusetts. His parents, David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold, raised him alongside his older brother and younger sister.

Quick facts about Edgar Allan Poe: 

1. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809.  

2. Edgar Allan Poe was 40 years old when he died. He passed away on October 7, 1849. He is buried at Westminster Presbyterian Church (Westminster Hall) in West Baltimore, Maryland. 

3. One of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poem is: 

Alone  

Since childhood’s hour I have not been 

As others were—I have not seen 

As others saw—I could not bring 

My passions from a common spring— 

From the same source I have not taken 

My sorrow—I could not awaken 

My heart to joy at the same tone— 

And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone— 

Then—in my childhood—in the dawn 

Of a most stormy life—was drawn 

From ev’ry depth of good and ill 

The mystery which binds me still—

From the torrent, or the fountain—

From the red cliff of the mountain—

From the sun that ’round me roll’d 

In its autumn tint of gold— 

From the lightning in the sky  

As it pass’d me flying by— 

From the thunder, and the storm—

And the cloud that took the form 

(When the rest of Heaven was blue) 

Of a demon in my view—

4. Edgar Allan Poe married his cousin, Virginia Eliza Clemm. They were married in 1836. They had no children. 

5. When Edgar Allan Poe was about a year old(1810), his father left the family. The following year, his mother died. The wealthy John Allan family took him in and raised him as their son.

6. Edgar Allan Poe’s last words were, “Lord, help my poor soul.” He passed away at Washington Medical College after a four-day stay. The doctor who worked there at the time stated that he died from phrenitis.

7. Edgar Allan Poe also wrote short stories. Here is a list of some of his stories:

• Tell-Tale Heart

8. Edgar Allan Poe was educated in the United Kingdom when his foster family moved there in 1815. He went to several different schools there. They returned to Richmond, Virginia, in the United States in 1820. 1826 Edgar enrolled in the University of Virginia to study modern languages.  

9. Edgar Allan Poe served a two-year term in the military. He enlisted on May 27, 1827, under the alias Edgar A. Perry.
