Last week, we dedicated our efforts to expressing gratitude for items and experiences that begin with the letter K. Today, we invite you to contribute by sharing something for which you are thankful that starts with the letter L. Your reflections will help cultivate an environment of appreciation and mindfulness. They flutter, crunch, swirl, and change colors, but leaves are more than just tree fashion. They’re the hard-working, shape-shifting superheroes of the plant world!

Let’s branch out into their world and uncover the leafy secrets hiding in plain sight.

🌞 1. Leaves Are Solar Panels for Plants

Leaves use a special process called photosynthesis to turn sunlight into food. They soak in sunlight, mix it with water and carbon dioxide, and create energy, kind of like a plant’s personal kitchen!

🌬️ 2. Leaves Help Us Breathe

While making food, leaves release oxygen into the air. So every time you take a breath, you’re basically saying thanks to a leaf.

🎨 3. Leaves Change Color With the Seasons

In autumn, green leaves turn brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange. That’s because the green pigment (chlorophyll) fades, revealing the hidden colors underneath. Nature’s costume change!

🧮 4. Leaves Come in Wild Shapes

Not all leaves are the same! You’ll find:

• Heart-shaped leaves (like redbud trees)
• Needle-like leaves (on pine trees)

🍁 L Is for Leaves: “Leaf of Thanks Collage”

Kids will explore the shapes, textures, and stories behind leaves while creating a beautiful collage filled with thankful thoughts.

🌿 What You’ll Need:

• Real leaves (gathered from safe outdoor spots) in various shapes and sizes
• Paper or cardstock for the collage base
• Glue or double-sided tape
• Markers, crayons, or pens
• Optional: magnifying glass, printable leaf outline, and gratitude prompts

🎨 Activity Instructions:

1. Explore & Collect:
   Go on a mini leaf hunt! Ask children to collect 5–7 leaves of different shapes, colors, or textures. Encourage curiosity: “What tree do you think this came from?”

2. Design the Collage:
   Glue or tape the leaves onto a sheet of paper to create an autumn scene, heart shape, spiral path, or abstract leaf creature.

3. Add Thankful Thoughts:
   Around each leaf, write or draw something they’re thankful for:

   • “I’m grateful for fresh air.”
   • “Thank you for cozy shade on sunny days.”
   • “Leaves remind me of fall walks with my family.”

4. Title It Creatively:
   Suggestions include:

   • “My Leaf of Thanks”
