Hello Wisconsin!! Have you ever visited Wisconsin before? Maybe you already live there? Whatever it may be, you can learn some quick facts about Wisconsin right here; just continue to read on. I absolutely love learning incredible facts about each of the different states in the United States. I would love to share some of those facts with you! Each and every Thursday, I will be posting quick facts about each of the fifty states in the United States. The states will be done in alphabetical (ABC) order! Last week we posted facts about West Virginia. This week we are posting quick facts about Wisconsin. You will learn facts about Wisconsin's state flag, bird, and many other state facts. The countdown is on, only one (1) more state to blog about! That means there is just one more week to go and we will be done and on to famous poets… Yay!!!

I will be posting a certificate of completion next week for anyone who has read all the quick facts about each of the fifty states in the United States. You can print it out, sign it, and give it to your child/ren for their participation and completion of the quick facts about the fifty states.

Did you know that Wisconsin was the thirtieth (30^th) state to join the union? Yes, that is right! Wisconsin officially joined the union on May 29, 1848. Wisconsin is located in the North Midwestern region of the United States. Wisconsin shares a border with four (4) states: Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan (Lake Superior). Wisconsin is the twenty-third (23^rd) largest state in the United States. That means Wisconsin is one of the bigger sized states in the United States of America. There are about 5,892,530 people that live in the state of Wisconsin.

Did you know that the population of the United States is estimated to be about 334,416,605 people and growing? (At the time of this writing)

Quick Facts about Wisconsin:

1. A few things Wisconsin is known for are: the Master Lock (padlock), the number one cheese producing state, and of course dairy farms. Here is a few of Wisconsin’s state nicknames: America’s Dairyland, the Cheese State, and the Badger State. The Wisconsin state motto is “Forward”. The abbreviation for Wisconsin is WI.

2. The capital of Wisconsin is Madison. Madison officially became the capital of Wisconsin in 1836. Madison has an estimated population of about 48,860 people.

3. The state bird of Wisconsin is the American Robin. The American Robin was chosen as the state bird for Wisconsin on June 4, 1949. The American Robin likes to sing (chirp). The American Robin has a reddish-orange colored chest area. The rest of the bird is a dark grayish brown in color with a dark brown-grayish capped head. It is a very beautiful bird. 4. Wisconsin official state flower is the Viola sororia also known as the Common blue violet. The Viola sororia is a flower that can be found growing throughout the state of Wisconsin. The Viola sororia starts blooming during the spring months. They are very beautiful flowers!! The Viola sororia became Wisconsin’s official state flower in June of 1949.

5. The current state flag of Wisconsin was officially adopted on May 1, 1981. Wisconsin’s state flag has a blue background. Wisconsin’s state seal appears on the center of the flag. The word Wisconsin is above the state seal and 1848 appears under the state seal.

6. Some crops that are grown in Wisconsin are: beets, carrots, corn, cranberries, lima beans, potatoes, and spinach. 

7. Some cool places to visit while in Wisconsin are: Cave of the Mounds, The House on the Rock, and The Apostle Islands.

8. Some animals that live in Wisconsin are: coyotes, foxes, martens, raccoons, river otter, shrews, and wolves.

9. Wisconsin can get really hot and really cold depending on the time of year. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Wisconsin was 114 degrees Fahrenheit in the Wisconsin Dells on July 13, 1936. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Wisconsin was -55 degrees (negative 55 degrees below zero) Fahrenheit in Couderay, Wisconsin on February 4, 1996.
