It is time to learn about the states! I will be posting facts about each of the fifty states in the United States. The states will be posted in alphabetical order! The first state will be Alabama! You will learn facts about Alabama's state flag, bird, and many other state facts. 

Did you know that Alabama was the 22nd state to join the union? Alabama joined the union in 1819! Alabama is located in the Southeastern region of the United States. Alabama is the 30th largest state by area and there are about 5,024,279 people living there. That is a big population!

Facts about Alabama:

1. A few things Alabama is known for are southern hospitality and sweet tea. Nicknames for the state of Alabama are: Heart of Dixie, Cotton State, and the Yellowhammer State. The abbreviation for Alabama is AL.

2. The capital of Alabama is Montgomery. Montgomery became the capital of Alabama in 1846. Montgomery has a population of over 199,000 people.

3. The Alabama state bird is the Northern flicker also known as the Yellowhammer. The Northern Flicker is a woodpecker. It has bright yellow coloring under its wings and tail. It is a beautiful bird.

4. The Alabama official state flower is the Camellia. The Camellia comes in shades of red, pink, and white. It is a beautiful flower!

5. The Alabama state flag started being used on February 16, 1895. The Alabama state flag features Saint Andrew’s cross. It has a red diagonal cross on a white background. 

6. Cotton is the number one crop grown in Alabama. Other crops grown in Alabama include: peanuts, corn, and soybeans. Apples, blueberries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, plums, and strawberries are also grown in Alabama.

7. The U.S. Space and Rocket Museum is located in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville, Alabama is also known as Rocket City, USA.

8. Magnolia Springs, Alabama has the only all water mail delivery route all year long. The water mail delivery started in 1915. The mail is delivered by boat.
