Have you ever taken a vacation to Pennsylvania before? Do you live there? Whichever it may be, you can learn some facts about Pennsylvania here, just continue reading. I like to learn quick facts about each of the different states in the United States. I would like to share some of those facts with you! Every Thursday, I will be posting quick facts about each of the fifty states in the United States. The states will be done in alphabetical (ABC) order! Last week we posted facts about Oregon. This week we are posting cool facts about Pennsylvania. You will learn facts about Pennsylvania's state flag, bird, and many other state facts. Only 12 more states to blog about! 

Did you know that Pennsylvania was the second (2^nd) state to join the union? Yes, that is correct! Pennsylvania officially joined the union on December 12, 1787! Pennsylvania is located in the Northeastern region of the United States. Pennsylvania is bordered by six (6) states: New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, and New York. Pennsylvania is the ninth (33^rd) largest state in the United States. That means Pennsylvania is one of the medium sized states. There are about 12,964,058 people that live in the state of Pennsylvania. That is a large amount of people.

Quick Facts about Pennsylvania:

1. A few things Pennsylvania is known for are: the Declaration of Independence, one of the thirteen original colonies, and the Gettysburg battle. A few of the nicknames for the state of Pennsylvania are: the Keystone State, the Coal State, and the Quaker State. The Pennsylvania state motto is “Virtue, liberty, and independence." The Pennsylvania state motto was adopted sometime in 1875. The abbreviation for Pennsylvania is PA.

2. The capital of Pennsylvania is Harrisburg. Harrisburg officially became the capital of Pennsylvania in 1812. Harrisburg has an estimated population of about 50,136 people.

3. The state bird of Pennsylvania is the Ruffed grouse. The Ruffed grouse was chosen as the state bird for Pennsylvania in 1931. You can look at pictures and read more about the Ruffed grouse here: Click here

4. The official state flower of Pennsylvania is the Mountain-laurel. The Pennsylvania Mountain-laurel grows along the ride sides, yards, and many other places in the state. The Pennsylvania Mountain-laurel is star shaped and comes in different shades of white, pink, and red. They are very beautiful flowers!! The Mountain-laurel became Pennsylvania’s official state flower in 1933.

5. Pennsylvania’s current state flag was officially adopted on February 26, 1925. Pennsylvania’s state flag has a blue background and the state seal appears on it.

6. Some crops that are grown in Pennsylvania are: barley, corn, cherries, grapes, hay, peaches, and wheat.

7. Some cool places to visit while in Pennsylvania are: the Independence National Historical Park, Dutch Wonderland, and Hershey Park.

8. Some animals that live in Pennsylvania are: black bear, bald eagles, long-tailed weasels, skunks, and white-tailed deer.

9. Pennsylvania can get very hot and very cold depending on the time of year. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Pennsylvania was 111 degrees Fahrenheit in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania on July 9/10, 1936. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Pennsylvania was -42 degrees (42 degrees below zero) Fahrenheit in Smethport, Pennsylvania on January 5, 1904.
